Insert or full-frame decides almost everything
Two quotes for the same window can differ by 2x, and it usually is not the window. An insert (retrofit) sets a new unit inside the existing frame, takes one to two hours, and keeps your trim. A full-frame replacement tears out to the rough opening and re-flashes it. A mid-tier vinyl insert runs roughly $350–$1,100 installed; the same window full-frame runs $550–$1,700. Before you compare any two bids, confirm which one each is quoting.
What actually moves the price
Whether your existing frame is actually sound
An insert is only valid if the frame is square, dry, and rot-free. If it is not, an insert traps the problem behind a new window. Sill or frame repair adds roughly $100–$600 per opening, and a contractor who inspects for it is protecting you, not padding.
Your cladding, on full-frame jobs
Stucco is the expensive one: it has to be saw-cut, re-lathed, patched, and color-matched, a premium near $300–$900 per window that most quotes under-count. Brick and lap siding add less.
Homes built before 1978
The EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires a lead-safe certified firm, adding roughly $50–$150 per window. This is not optional and a bid that ignores it is either uncertified or planning to cut corners.
Egress requirements in bedrooms and basements
Code generally requires 24 inches minimum net clear height, 20 inches minimum net clear width, and a sill no higher than 44 inches. A 44-inch double-hung yields only about 22 inches of clear height and fails; a casement clears its full opening. A full basement egress conversion involves saw-cutting the foundation and runs $2,500–$8,000.
What a complete quote names out loud

The one to watch: A quote that will not say whether it is insert or full-frame. Blending the two is the single biggest reason published window prices disagree, and it is the easiest place for a bid to look cheap while delivering less.
