AC replacement cost.
What a new AC or heat pump really costs, itemized by system and home size, in about 30 seconds. No national-average hand-waving.
AC replacement cost by system
| Central Air Conditioner | $7,350 – $11,400 |
| Heat Pump | $9,350 – $14,900 |
| Furnace | $5,350 – $8,400 |
| Ductless Mini-Split | $6,350 – $11,900 |
Typical installed range (mid tier) for a 1,800 sq ft home. Adjust the estimator for your own system.
Tonnage and SEER2 set the price, in that order
Central AC is priced by capacity (tons) and efficiency (SEER2). The federal minimum is 13.4 SEER2 in northern states and 14 in the south. For a 3-ton system, baseline efficiency runs roughly $4,500–$5,800 installed, mid-tier 15–16 SEER2 lands near $5,300–$7,000, and 17–18+ variable-speed reaches $6,500–$9,500 or more. For most homes the mid tier is the value point: a real bill reduction without the variable-speed premium.
What actually moves the price
The Manual J load calculation, or its absence
Correct sizing comes from a Manual J calculation using your insulation, windows, and orientation. Oversizing is the most common and most expensive mistake: an oversized system short-cycles, never dehumidifies properly, and wears its compressor out early. A contractor who sizes purely off the old equipment is guessing.
The A2L refrigerant transition
Manufacturers stopped producing R-410A equipment, and new systems ship with R-454B or R-32. The change adds installation time, tooling, and warranty paperwork, and it is a real part of why 2026 pricing sits above 2024. It also means a new condenser generally cannot be paired with your old indoor coil.
Ductwork and electrical you did not budget for
Undersized, leaky, or failing ducts add roughly $1,500–$4,500. A high-efficiency or heat-pump system may require an electrical panel upgrade at $800–$2,500. Neither shows up in a headline equipment price.
When you book, which is unique to this trade
HVAC demand is violently seasonal. Late March to mid May, contractors are available within days and you have real negotiating leverage. Mid June through August, lead times stretch to three to five weeks and prices firm at list. Replacing a dying system in April rather than July is one of the few discounts you control.
What a complete quote names out loud
- A Manual J load calculation showing the recommended size and its assumptions
- Brand and model number, not just a tonnage and a SEER2 rating
- Itemized labor and materials including refrigerant, line set, and electrical work
- Ductwork modifications, stated explicitly as included or excluded
- Warranty terms in writing: parts, labor, and what voids registration
- Permit handling, which is required in most jurisdictions
The one to watch: A contractor who quotes a size by reading the label on your existing unit. If the original system was oversized, that error gets copied into a system you will live with for 15 years.
AC replacement cost: FAQ
How much does AC replacement cost?
A standard central AC replacement runs roughly $4,500–$9,500 installed in 2026, with high-efficiency variable-speed systems reaching $7,500–$13,500. Price depends most on tonnage and SEER2 tier. The estimator above prices your home size, system type, and local labor.
Can I replace just the outdoor unit?
Usually not anymore. The condenser and indoor coil must match in capacity and refrigerant, and the industry move from R-410A to R-454B means a new condenser rarely pairs legally or reliably with an old coil. A mismatched pair also tends to void the warranty.
Should I repair or replace?
The working rule: if the system is 12 or more years old and the repair costs more than half of replacement, replace it. Replace outright if it still runs R-22, if the compressor has failed, or if the evaporator coil is leaking. Repair if it is under 10 years old and the fault is a capacitor, contactor, fan motor, or thermostat.
What SEER2 rating is worth paying for?
For most homes, 15–16 SEER2 is the value tier. Higher ratings earn their premium in hot climates with long cooling seasons and long ownership horizons. In a mild climate with a short ownership window, baseline efficiency is often the rational choice.
When is the cheapest time to replace an AC?
Late March through mid May. Contractors are between heating and cooling season, availability is measured in days rather than weeks, and you have leverage on price. By mid June, lead times run three to five weeks and quotes firm up.
