You are paying for waterproofing you will never see
The visible parts of a shower, tile and glass and a valve trim, are a minority of the cost. Underneath them sit a waterproofing assembly, a sloped pan, a drain, and the labor to make all three continuous. That is why a prefab acrylic unit lands near $3,500–$8,000, a semi-custom tiled shower near $8,000–$15,000, and a full custom curbless build reaches $15,000–$25,000 and beyond in the same square footage. The difference is almost entirely below the tile.

Which waterproofing system, named by product
Two families exist: a traditional mortar bed over a PVC pan liner, and modern bonded systems, meaning sheet membrane (Schluter Kerdi), foam board (Wedi), or liquid-applied (RedGard). Liquid membrane is cheapest in material, around a dollar per square foot, but needs two or three coats to a specified dry-film thickness with long cure waits. Sheet membrane costs more and has a factory-set thickness. Installed costs land close. Failure rates do not, because liquid systems fail on inconsistent coverage.
The pan slope, which is a code number
Plumbing codes require the finished shower floor to fall toward the drain, generally between an eighth and a half inch per foot, with a quarter inch per foot the common target, and the liner beneath it pitched the same way to weep holes at the drain. Making a large-format tile follow that slope in two directions at once is skilled, slow work, and it is where cheap tile bids quietly fall behind.
Curbless, which is a framing job before it is a tile job
A zero-threshold entry means the shower floor finishes level with the bathroom floor while still sloping to a drain, so the subfloor under the shower has to drop roughly two to three inches. On wood framing that means cutting joists and reinforcing the opening. On a slab it means jackhammering out a section of concrete. Going curbless commonly adds $500–$2,000 on wood framing, and materially more on slab.
Drain type, small money with large consequences
A conventional round point drain can cost as little as $15. A quality linear drain starts around $200. The linear drain earns the difference by letting the floor slope in one direction only, which is what makes large-format tile and a curbless entry practical to build. If a bid specifies a linear drain, it is usually because the design requires one, not because it is an upsell.
Glass, priced by area and thickness
Frameless enclosures commonly run $900–$3,500, roughly $35–$70 per square foot of glass plus hardware and labor. Half-inch glass costs more per square foot than three-eighths. Low-iron glass, which loses the green tint, adds roughly $6–$15 per square foot, and a water-spot coating $4–$20. A single fixed splash panel instead of a full enclosure is the cheapest way to keep spray off the vanity.
What the quote has to spell out
- The waterproofing system named by product, and whether it covers the walls as well as the pan
- Pan construction: a prefabricated sloped base or a site-built mortar bed
- Whether a flood test is performed and inspected before any tile goes on
- Drain type, and whether the drain is being relocated
- For curbless, exactly how the subfloor is recessed and who performs the structural work
- Glass thickness, coatings, and whether panels are stock or measured after tile is set
- Niche, bench, and grab-bar blocking, all of which must be framed before the walls close
Where this goes wrong: A tiled shower quote with no waterproofing product named and no flood test. 'We waterproof it' is not a specification. The membrane is the only thing between your shower and the framing, it becomes permanently invisible the moment tile goes on, and its failure shows up two years later as a stain on the ceiling of the room below.

Is a curbless shower worth the extra cost?
It depends on your floor structure and how long you plan to stay. The added cost is structural rather than cosmetic: the subfloor must drop two to three inches, which is manageable on wood joists and expensive on a concrete slab.
